Seeding Across a 700-Foot Rise
Hydroseeding in Avon covers a big range of ground in one town. Elevation runs from 148 feet to 879 feet. Talcott Mountain, part of the trap rock Metacomet Ridge, flanks the east side, and Huckleberry Hill and Woodford Hills on the west side are covered in suburban homes. The town center between them is flatter. A lawn plan that works in the valley may not work on a hilltop lot, and we plan each one separately.
Hillside neighborhoods
Homes on Huckleberry Hill, Woodford Hills and the slopes of Avon Mountain often have sloped lawns, terraced yards and driveway cuts. On these, we hydroseed with a heavier fiber mulch, use bonded fiber matrix on steep sections, and set straw blankets on banks where water concentrates. Swales that carry roof and driveway runoff get lined so they do not gully.
Valley and river ground
The Farmington River borders the west side and cuts through the east side near the Avon Congregational Church. About 12,400 years ago, a campsite beside the river was buried by sediment from the river's occasional flooding; it was excavated in 2019. River-flat yards are easier to seed but need care with grading so soil stays out of the river.
Growth
Avon went from a rural town to a suburban one in the 1900s. Population rose 14.3 percent between 2000 and 2010 and 4.6 percent in the following decade. New homes and teardown rebuilds keep up demand for lawn installation, grading and topsoil.

Avon Questions
Is seeding a hilltop lot in Avon different from one in the valley?
Yes. Hilltop and hillside lots need more slope protection, and exposed spots can dry out faster, so we adjust mulch and watering advice.
Can you line the swale that carries water off my driveway?
Yes. We grade the swale, seed it and add a blanket where the flow is strong.
We tore down an old house to rebuild. When should the lawn go in?
After final grading and topsoil, once heavy trucks are finished. We can coordinate with your builder.
Do you put down topsoil on new construction lots?
Yes. Builder lots often have thin or compacted soil, and topsoil makes a big difference in how the lawn establishes.
