Two Kinds of Ground in One Town

Hydroseeding in Berlin runs from wet lowlands to steep ridge slopes. Between 1700 and 1750, farms, mills and blacksmiths grew up in the Great Swamp area, and low, wet ground still shows up on lots in town. On the west side, the Metacomet Ridge rises with Lamentation Mountain, Short Mountain, Ragged Mountain and the Hanging Hills.

Wet ground first

On a damp lot, seed will sprout but grass often rots or thins out in standing water. Before we hydroseed, we look at where water collects. Fixing it may mean regrading to move water toward a swale, trenching for a drain line, or raising low spots with topsoil. Grading crews handle the excavation and trenching; then the area is seeded and mulched.

Ridge slopes

The Metacomet Ridge is made of basalt layered with softer sedimentary rock, and its upper slopes are hot and dry. Homes built near the ridge often sit on cut slopes with thin soil. These spots get a heavier hydromulch or bonded fiber matrix, and the steepest faces get erosion control blankets.

Brick-making history

Berlin had a brick industry that turned out 90,000 bricks a day until the 1960s, and tinware making and peddling were here from the mid-1700s. Old industrial and brickyard ground can be disturbed and uneven, which means fill, grading and topsoil before a lawn goes in.

Berlin Questions

My Berlin yard stays wet. Will hydroseeding fix it?

Not by itself. We fix the drainage first, by regrading or adding a drain line, and then seed.

Can you seed a thin-soil slope near Lamentation Mountain?

Yes. We add topsoil where we can and use bonded fiber matrix or blankets so the seed stays on the slope.

Do you do the trenching for drain lines too?

Our grading crews handle excavation and trenching for drainage as part of the dirt work.

We are building near Silver Lake. What sediment control is needed?

Silt fence along the downhill side at minimum, plus any measures your town approval lists.

Can you level an uneven yard before seeding?

Yes. Rough grading, topsoil and fine grading come first so the new lawn is smooth.
