From the Riverbank to the Ridge

Hydroseeding in Suffield covers big, varied properties. The town spans 42.9 square miles, one of the larger towns in the area, on the west bank of the Connecticut River about 16 miles north of Hartford. The Metacomet Ridge runs north to south through the center of town as West Suffield Mountain, so lots on the east side face toward the river while lots in West Suffield sit beyond the ridge.

Ridge-side lots

The ridge is basalt over sedimentary layers, with broken talus at the base of its cliffs, and upper slopes that run hot and dry. Homes built against the ridge face thin soil, rock and slope. We add topsoil where it is thin, grade for runoff and, on the steep sections, cover the ground with erosion control blankets or a sprayed bonded fiber matrix.

Large lots

Suffield's 2000 housing density was about 115 units per square mile, low for the region. Large lawns are a good match for hydroseeding, which covers big areas quickly. We often suggest a fine lawn mix near the house and a tougher, lower-maintenance mix on outer areas.

Growth in bursts

Suffield grew 38.5 percent in the 1960s and 23.0 percent in the 1990s, but only 0.1 percent between 2010 and 2020. Much of the work now is renovating lawns on homes from those growth periods, plus occasional new construction.

The river side

The first permitted use here was a sawmill ordered by Major John Pynchon on his Stoney Brooke Plantation tract. Today, properties near the Connecticut River need silt fence on any grading that drains toward it.

Suffield Questions

Can you seed a lawn on the rocky ground near West Suffield Mountain?

Yes, with topsoil over the rock and slope protection on steep parts.

Does a big rural lawn need the same seed everywhere?

No. Many owners use a finer mix near the house and a tougher, lower-maintenance mix on the outer areas.

Our 1990s lawn is tired. What do you recommend?

Core aeration and overseeding if the grass is mostly intact; a full renovation if weeds have taken over.

Do you put up silt fence near the Connecticut River?

Yes, on grading that drains toward the river or a wetland.
