Seeding in a Town Built on Growing Things
Hydroseeding in Wethersfield continues a long local habit of putting seed in the ground. From the late 1700s to the mid-1800s the town was the center of New England's onion trade, and in 1820 William G. Comstock founded what became Comstock, Ferre & Company, described as America's oldest continuously operating seed company. Our job is more modest: getting a thick, even lawn established on a home lot or a commercial strip.
Choosing the seed mix
We do not use one blend for every yard. Sunny, open lots get a mix heavy in turf-type tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass for wear and drought tolerance. Shaded yards in older neighborhoods get more fine fescue. On low, wet areas we lean toward grasses that tolerate damp ground. The mix is blended into the hydroseed slurry along with hydromulch and starter fertilizer.
Till soils and drainage
The USDA describes the Wethersfield soil series as a well-drained soil formed in glacial till from reddish sandstone, shale and conglomerate, on till plains, low ridges and drumlins of the Connecticut Valley, with slopes from flat to steep. Its lower layers are dense basal till, which can slow water moving down. Where we find that dense layer close to the surface, we add topsoil so roots have room.
The Cove, Great Meadows and Old Wethersfield
Wethersfield Cove and the Great Meadows lie along the Connecticut River, and Old Wethersfield is a 2-square-mile historic district with about 1,100 buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries. Yards in the historic area are often small and established, so lawn repair, overseeding and careful hand grading are more common than full new lawns.

Wethersfield Questions
Which grass seed do you use for Wethersfield lawns?
It depends on sun, shade and wear. Most sunny yards get a tall fescue and bluegrass blend; shady yards get more fine fescue.
Can you overseed an old lawn in the historic district without tearing it up?
Yes. We can core aerate or lightly scarify and then hydroseed over the existing turf so new grass fills the thin spots.
What if my soil has a hard layer underneath?
Dense till near the surface limits roots. We add topsoil over it so the new lawn has a deeper root zone.
Do you work near the Cove and Great Meadows?
We work throughout town. Near low ground by the river, we pay extra attention to drainage and keeping soil out of the water.
Is hydroseeding better than sod for a small yard?
Sod gives instant green but costs more per square foot. Hydroseed needs a few weeks to thicken up and often roots deeper. We can talk through which fits your yard.
