Holding Soil on Glastonbury's Hills
Hydroseeding in Glastonbury is often slope work. The town starts on the banks of the Connecticut River and climbs into foothills, reaching roughly 800 feet in the rural areas near Bolton and Hebron. Wikipedia notes that some major developments are built entirely on relatively steep hills, Minnechaug Mountain among them, where a residential area grew from the 1970s into the late 1990s.
Why slopes need more than seed
On a steep backyard or a cut bank beside a driveway, rain runs off faster than it soaks in. Straw and loose seed slide. A hydroseed slurry with fiber hydromulch and tackifier sticks to the surface, and on steeper ground we use bonded fiber matrix, which dries into a continuous mat. Where the bank is steep enough that even that would move, we lay erosion control blankets or straw blankets, pin them, and seed over or under them.
New subdivisions
Diamond Lake, a private lake, is surrounded by growing subdivisions of large homes. Big new lots mean large areas of disturbed soil, long driveways and graded swales that all need stabilization. While the house goes up, silt fence runs along the downhill edge of the lot; once grading is done we hydroseed lawn areas and line swales so they carry water without cutting a gully.
Orchard and farm ground
Glastonbury's orchard history runs deep: J.H. Hale Orchards grew from 1 acre in 1866 to more than 1,200 acres by 1900, and orchards and berry farms still dot the hills. When former farm or orchard land is converted to house lots, the soil can be in good shape, but it is often stony and uneven. Fine grading and topsoil before seeding make the difference between a smooth lawn and a lumpy one.
Services on Glastonbury properties
- Slope stabilization with hydromulch, bonded fiber matrix or blankets
- New lawn installation for new construction
- Silt fence and sediment control during building
- Yard grading and drainage swales
Rural parts of town sit near the boundary between two climate types, a little cooler than the river flats, so we plan seeding dates with that in mind. Get a free estimate or call (860) 812-7927.

Glastonbury Questions
At what point is a Glastonbury slope too steep for plain hydroseed?
On gentle slopes, standard hydromulch works. As slopes get steeper we move to bonded fiber matrix, and on the steepest banks to pinned erosion control blankets.
Can you seed a cut bank beside my new driveway?
Yes. Driveway cuts are a common problem area. We usually recommend a blanket or bonded fiber matrix so the face does not wash before roots form.
I am building near Diamond Lake. What erosion control do I need?
At minimum, silt fence on the downhill side and quick cover on bare soil. Your town permit may list specific measures; we install what the plan calls for.
Our lot used to be orchard. Is the soil good for grass?
Often yes, but it can be stony and uneven. We rake out rock, fine grade and add topsoil where it is thin before seeding.
Do you line drainage swales?
Yes. We grade the swale, seed it and add a blanket where the flow is fast enough to scour.
